Bicycle TMJ Injury
Careless Drivers vs. Portland Bicyclists.
If you have injured your mouth, you are probably going to need more follow-up care and attention than you might suspect, particularly if you have sustained a TMJ or Temporomandibular Joint Injury in a bike accident.
We all take for granted the easy way we chew foods, and how our jaw hinges open and shut. But truth be told, it does not work like a steam shovel bucket or a bulldozer. Your jaw joint does not simply move up and down when you chew. The joint is actually two joints, on either side of the jaw.
These TMJ joints are complicated and fragile, despite being able to assist the jaw to exert great force permitting you to chew your food. As I stated earlier, the jaw joint is called the Temporomandibular Joint and it deserves it’s name as it is quite a mouthful.
If after your bicycle accident you notice: pain when opening or shutting your mouth, limited range of motion opening or closing your mouth or jaw, locking or catching of your jaw, pain when chewing (along with several other lesser symptoms, but be mindful that this list is not for purposes of making a medical diagnosis), then be sure to think about going to a dentist.
Not every dentist has big experience in diagnosing TMJ injury. As a matter of fact, it might surprise you to learn that many dentists can only make a supposition that you sustained a TMJ injury, and you might need to go for a specialist consult.
Do not brush off smaller complaints about chewing or aching of your mouth or jaw, be sure to let your Portland Bicycle Accident Attorney know about them.
A good TMJ exam will include watching you bite something, maybe taking an impression or mold (not always), looking at the movement side to side of your jaw as you bite chew or swallow, and probably dental X-rays if you have not had them in a while.
Your Portland Bicycle Injury Lawyer should probably be prudent and request that you clear up the reason for your continuing mouth, jaw, swallowing, chewing and other limitations before attempting to place a settlement value upon your bicycle accident case.
In rare instances, some of my bicycle accident lawsuits have been about TMJ that required constant care, manipulation, therapy, bite guards, and even operations to replace the TMJ joints. It is not unique to have medical-dental care consisting of being put under by anesthesia and having the jaw or mandible opened a bit more than you could do on your own, just to get it back in place.
In another section of this site, I discuss other bike accident dental injuries and also talk about bicycle jaw related injuries and how a Bicycle Accident Attorney may view them; call me now for a Free Legal Consultation at 888-446-1999, or go ahead and fill out our case evaluation form for a quick callback to discuss your case.
