Bicycle Accident – fractured jaw

Careless Drivers vs. Portland Bicyclists.

If you fractured your jaw in a bicycle accident, then your injury needs to be viewed by your Portland Bike Accident Attorney as a fairly serious injury.
A jaw fracture may have differences in the medical classification or description; Hairline Jaw Fracture, Simple Jaw Fracture, Transverse Jaw Fracture, Complex Jaw Fracture, Comminuted Jaw Fracture, are some of ways that these different severities of jaw fracture may be medically described.

A jaw fracture may require simple immobilization, or external fixation – sort of like Frankenstein’s’ neck bolts. There is usually a wiring and perhaps screwing together of jaw bone fragments.

Sometimes the jaw is shattered to the point that the hurt and injured bicyclist will need a facial reconstruction surgery, or to get donor bone from the hip area or cadaver bone implanted. Mandibular injuries can be quite serious and have long range and costly future care and treatment.

Aside and apart from the serious bicycle injury of a fractured jaw, I explained in another section of this website that there is a pretty complicated jaw or mandible joint called the TMJ joint.

Depending upon the angle and force of impact, the way your mouth and teeth were from birth and the type of fracture, it is possible that you may have sustained one of these TMJ joint injuries.

So going only to an orthopedic surgeon for a jaw fracture, even a hairline fracture, might not be good enough to notice and be able to diagnose a TMJ disorder. Even if your TMJ joint was fine before the bicycle accident, the immobility required by wiring the jaw shut or otherwise restricting the chewing may cause a TMJ problem.

By proper dental and medical evaluation, perhaps including a forensic dental expert, a maxillofacial surgeon consultation, your bicycle accident lawyer can learn about the dollar estimates of future care that you might need; limitations upon chewing certain foods; and many other items of note and interest which may be made part of your overall settlement demand or jury trial for your bicycle accident lawsuit or bicycle accident case.
